Do not keep it cluttered and scattered, so that you can easily look at it. Remember that your resume is the first thing that an employer sees, you need to be careful that you present a resume that is a good one.Remember that most of the people who apply for jobs leave resumes until they have to fill them out. This will help your employer decide whether you are the right person for the job or not.The most important thing is to make your resume attractive - Employers do not want to read something that is too technical or formal. They want to read something that is enjoyable and interesting. Use the common vocabulary and see if the employment agency can make some edits to the resume that you provide them. Keep it simple so that the employer gets to read the resume easily.Always remember that you are only human and the employer might overlook something that you did not expect. The Theory of Social Proof

The Theory of Social Proof A post from Dan Schwabel’s Personal Branding blog inspired this post. Read the original guest post by Wendy Brache here. The Theory of Social Proof states that people assume the actions of others reflect correct behavior for a given situation.    When in doubt, look around you and do what the people at the next table are doing.   Most of us do it, and it works most of the time.   You probably won’t make a monkey of yourself in any given situation.   But you’re not locked into it.   What would happen if you became the social leader? Here’s a common scenario: You walk into a room where a business presentation will be delivered in a few minutes.   People file in quietly, find a seat with plenty of empty space around it (we Americans love our personal space.)   They begin to read the materials at their seat quietly and carefully.   When someone new takes a seat at their table, they glance up politely and then go back to perusing their materials.   The hush in the room is palpable; suddenly, we’re all shy tenâ€"year-olds again on the first day of fifth grade. What if you didn’t do that?   You can create your own version of social proof by smiling, even laughing, and starting a lively conversation as you take a seat.   Declare (or demonstrate) that your table is going to be the fun one filled with the smart people.   Success breeds success; people will be drawn to you.   It’s the same principle that draws you into a busy, noisy and cheerful restaurant  and makes you pass up one that’s empty and quiet. Scientific experiments have determined that when someone’s perception or experience with something is ambiguous, the participants will rely on each other to define reality.   If I say that an object is moving at a certain speed, and you’re not sure how fast it’s moving, chances are you’ll come to accept my judgment and make it your own.     Think about that for a minute.   If you’re not sure what’s happening, chances are you’ll rely on others to help you decide.   Is this worthwhile?   Is that guy smart? Are we having fun yet?   You can follow, or you can lead.

3 Ways to Stand Out as an Intern

3 Ways to Stand Out as an Intern Whether you’re just starting out in your career, or have decided to pursue a new directionwork wise, it is important to get as much experience and knowledge as you can, as soon as you can. A great way to go about doing this, and to also get your foot in the door at companies you’d love to work for, is through becoming an intern. In order to ensure you stand out for all the right reasons during your work placement though, you need to find ways to impress everyone you deal with. Read on for some key ways you can make a good impression when you’re the “new kid on the block” at a firm.1. Preparation is VitalevalFor starters, preparation is vital and can make a big difference in not only how you are perceived by those you deal with at the company, but also to how much you can get out of the role. Before you step through the front doors, ensure you’ve spent a good amount of time researching the business online and in books or magazines or any other spots you can, so that you’re not having to play catch up so much on your first day. It’s a good idea to become familiar with the company’s various departments, if relevant, as well as its products or services. Work out what it the brand is known for what its big successes have been over the years; and how the firm first got started.Learn as much as you can about who the key team members are, especially the main people you’ll be working with, and what the culture within the company is like If you’re not clear about certain aspects of the position when it comes to beginning your internship, don’t be too afraid to reach out for clarification. The person who hired you would no doubt be happy to see you being proactive and asking questions, rather than arriving unprepared or at the wrong time or place. With plenty of details, you can spend time researching or brushing up on things before you start, such as refreshing your ability to use a particular computer program. The more prepared you are for your intern ship, the more you will be able to help others each day, and the more you will make a good impression as a result.2. Present Yourself Professionally in Every WayevalNext, keep in mind that the way you present yourself can have a huge impact on how you are perceived during your internship. It doesn’t matter that you’re not a permanent hire; you need to look and act every bit as professionally as if you were starting as a full-time employee. To “dress for success”, it helps to speak to your direct supervisor, a hiring manager, or other key contact about what kind of dress code the company has. This will ensure you fit in from day one.If you’re still not clear on the best outfit choice though, remember that it’s always better to dress formally than to be too casual.Dressing professionally will help you to convey a good impression to your supervisorAnother way to present yourself professionally is via the written word. Because you likely wish to be offered a permanent job aft er your internship ends, or at least receive referrals to other companies and/or receive a great testimonial, make sure your social media profiles and resume are up to date and professional.Be careful not to post any potentially risky material on your Facebook, Twitter, or other social pages, so that people don’t look you up and find out things they didn’t want to know about you â€" such as that you’re a messy drunk, bully people online, or make disparaging remarks about the company. In addition, ensure you get a resume reviewfrom a trusted, experienced professional, just in case a hiring manager or business owner takes another look at your documents to see if you would be the right fit for a permanent role.3. Be Proactive and Willing to LearnLastly, you’ll make a good impression as an intern if you’re proactive. Don’t constantly wait for jobs to be given to you; instead, find ways to preempt what tasks might need to be done, and just go ahead and do them, or offer to do so when meeting with your managers or colleagues.Go the extra mile in everything you do, and take initiative when it comes to learning new things, asking relevant questions, and meeting new people within the firm.evalDoing all of this will impress your bosses and other team members, and show what you’d be like as a permanent employee. This then makes it much more likely that you’ll be remembered for all the right reasons by the end of your placement.

5 Resources - When You Should Compromise on Compensation - CareerAlley

5 Resources - When You Should Compromise on Compensation - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didnt do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Mark Twain Individual job search can be challenging (regardless of why you are searching for a new job), but group job search (as in a downsizing, closing of a location or closing of a company) takes the challenge to a new level. Of course there are a number of factors that potentially increase the pressure, like when an entire industry is under pressure or if the overall economy is suffering. Everyone, of course, handles the job search pressure differently. Some people dont actually look for a job until after their last day (denial) while others jump in with both feet and do the all out job search with a goal of finding a new job before their current job ends. Everyone needs to approach the process in the job search in their own way and time, but panic is not a good way to start. Having lived through events described above several times (unfortunately), Ive learned that you need to be flexible (and careful) in the way you handle your future compensation. There is sometimes a fear that you will never get another job and this may lead you to take a role for significantly less than you are currently paid (or potentially worth). On the other hand, holding out for a level of compensation that may no longer be realistic can also backfire. So what is the right balance between what you are really worth and what the market will pay? That, my friend, is the topic of todays post. What am I worth? The first thing you want to try and understand is what you are worth and there are many tools that will help you do that. I must caution, however, that these tools only offer guidance as your exact set of circumstances (years of experience, education, type of experience, current economic trends, etc.) play a major role in determining compensation. Salary.com Stands to reason that this is a good place to start. This site has two views, one for employers and one for personal use. You can register on the site or just use there tools without registering. There are links at the top of the page for Salary and Job Search or use the free Salary Wizard available left center page. Enter your title and location on the Personal Salary Wizard. Entering your information will return a basic report. There are additional tools below this for Job Search, Education and Cost of Living. Additionally, there are a number of other related tools under the Tools menu. Salary Calculator Great salary calculator from AOL Jobs, along with a Cost of Living Calculator. Salary Wizard The New York Times Salary Wizard, along with benefits, cost of living and more. Should I take a cut in compensation? This is a great question and is asked all of the time (as you will see from some of the links below). This is, of course, a personal decision. But you should be well informed (can you afford it, were you overpaid before, is the job in a less expensive market, etc.). Hopefully the following articles will help. Should I Accept A Job Offer Below My Current Pay Range? This article is from Timsstrategy.com and it offers some great advice. Take a look at Tims Pros and Cons (you should be making your list as well). But also take a look at his five factors for consideration. Again, it is a personal choice driven by many factors, but think long and hard on this one. Should You Accept that Lousy Job Offer? Yes Another view, this one posted on the CBS News site. I dont actually agree that it is as cut and dry as the last paragraph would lead you to believe. But, that being said, personal circumstances combined with market conditions for your profession will provide the best answer for you. Good luck in your search. Joey Trebif
